The main purpose of chemical nomenclature is to disambiguate the spoken or written names of chemical compounds: each name should refer to one compound. Secondarily, each compound should have only one name, although in some cases some alternative names are accepted. Preferably, the name should also represent the structure or chemistry of a compound.
Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning (POGIL) is an activity-based, group-learning instructional strategy. POGIL was created in 1994 to improve teaching of general chemistry . Today, POGIL is implemented in more than 1,000 American high schools and colleges.
The general rule is to use the name most commonly used to refer to the compound, as evidenced by use in reliable sources (in line with WP:COMMONNAME). Classes of compounds may have more specific guidance on naming, such as the use of international nonproprietary names for pharmaceutical compounds (see WP:NCMED and below).
The names "caffeine" and "3,7-dihydro-1,3,7-trimethyl-1H-purine-2,6-dione" both signify the same chemical compound. The systematic name encodes the structure and composition of the caffeine molecule in some detail, and provides an unambiguous reference to this compound, whereas the name "caffeine" simply names it.
The shorter of the two chains becomes the first part of the name with the -ane suffix changed to -oxy, and the longer alkane chain becomes the suffix of the name of the ether. Thus, CH 3 OCH 3 is methoxymethane, and CH 3 OCH 2 CH 3 is methoxyethane (not ethoxymethane). If the oxygen is not attached to the end of the main alkane chain, then the ...
A mnemonic is a memory aid used to improve long-term memory and make the process of consolidation easier. Many chemistry aspects, rules, names of compounds, sequences of elements, their reactivity, etc., can be easily and efficiently memorized with the help of mnemonics.
Although most compounds are referred to by their IUPAC systematic names ... Protonated molecular hydrogen – H + 3; Trioxidane – H 2 O 3; Water - H 2 O [204] He.
A molecular entity formed by loose association between two or more component molecular entities (ionic or uncharged), or the corresponding chemical species. The bonding between the components is normally weaker than in a covalent bond. [2] See also coordination complex. compound A substance that is made up of two or more chemically bonded elements.
