Southern Appalachian low-elevation pine forests occur on a variety of topographic and landscape positions, including ridgetops, upper- and mid-slopes, and in lower elevations (generally below 2,300 feet (700 m)) such as mountain valleys. These forests are dominated by shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata) and Virginia pine (Pinus virginiana).
The Mount Rogers area contains a unique record of the geohistory of Virginia. There is evidence from the rocks that volcanoes were part of the landscape. Roughly 760 million years ago, rift-related (divergent) volcanoes erupted along the axis of what later became the Appalachians, and one remnant of that volcanic zone, with its volcanic rocks, still can be seen at Mount Rogers.
A diverse fish community swam in what is now Virginia during the Early Jurassic. The best represented among the well-preserved fossils they left behind were semionotids. Other kinds of fish present in Early Jurassic Virginia included coelacanths and palaeoniscids. Their fossils were buried in a deposit now called the Midland Fish Bed. [9]
The origin of both lakes is unclear. Due to unconsolidated sediments, Lake Drummond should have eroded very quickly. Some geologists have proposed that it may have formed from a meteorite impact. Mountain Lake appears to be a natural dam, formed by the Clinch sandstone, which impounded a mountain stream. The state has nine major river basins. [9]
