Joplin is the main hub of the three-county Joplin-Miami, Missouri-Oklahoma Metro area, which is home to 210,077 people; this makes the city the fifth largest metropolitan area in Missouri. In May 2011, a violent EF5 tornado killed more than 150 people and destroyed one-third of the city.

Eventually Hugh and Lee Anne Howsman purchased the building to house their Howsman's Office Supply and Furniture Co. [9] Over time Howsman's business plan changed and in 2006 they sold the building to the Matt Miller Co. of Springfield, Missouri, [10] who redeveloped the upper stories into lofts and restored the main floor into an events space.
