Calochortus amabilis is a bulbous perennial herb producing an upright, somewhat waxy branching stem to heights between 10 and 50 centimeters. [2] The leaf at the base of the stem is flat, waxy, and narrow in shape, reaching up to 50 centimeters long and not withering away at flowering.
Calochortus pulchellus is a rare species of flowering plant in the lily family known by the common name Mt. Diablo fairy-lantern or Mount Diablo globelily. [3] [4]Calochortus pulchellus is endemic to California, where it is mainly restricted to Mount Diablo of the Diablo Range, in Contra Costa County of the eastern San Francisco Bay Area. [5]

[3] Each individual plant usually produces only one flower per bloom cycle, occasionally two; plants can be found in groups of 2 to 5 (and up to 12) in an area of less than 1 m 2. It is easily identifiable by the large, bright orange to red papery calyx covering over its fruit, which resembles paper lanterns.It is a perennial herbaceous plant growing to 40–60 cm (16–24 in) tall, with spirally arranged leaves 6–12 cm (2.4–4.7 in) long and 4–9 cm (1.6–3.5 in) broad.
