In 2005, Western Carolina hired N.C. State assistant coach, and former Ohio and Wittenberg head coach, Larry Hunter to succeed Steve Shurina as head coach. Hunter led the Catamounts to their first winning season since 1999-00 with a record of 16-15 and a co-Southern Conference North Division title during the 2008-09 season.
The Catamounts represent Western Carolina University in the NCAA's Southern Conference. Western Carolina began competing in intercollegiate basketball in 1928. It opened in 1974 and is home to the Western Carolina University Catamounts football team. The field itself is named Bob Waters Field.
