Regarding "BMP" being the correct name for the format, BMP is an abbreviation. It's not a formal name, and unless there was reason to believe that there truly is a disconnect between people who would recognise "BMP" and those who would recognise "bitmap", I don't buy that "only the nerds" use "bitmap".
