The union was founded in 1893 in Boston, as the National Steel and Copper Plate Printers' Union of the United States. It was chartered by the American Federation of Labor on July 2, 1898. In 1901, it changed its name to the International Steel and Copper Plate Printers of North America , to include members in Canada.
FESPA was formed as a 'non-profit' organisation in 1962 by a group of screen printing associations whose aim was to create a platform to share knowledge on screen printing technology in Europe. IPEX was an international event, serving both the UK and the international print industry. In 1963 the exhibit Printing and the Mind of Man held in connection with IPEX "foreshadowed the impending impact of electronics and presaged the demise of prepress mechanics and craft practices."
