Dave Irwin (born July 12, 1954) [1] is a former alpine ski racer who represented Canada at two Winter Olympic Games and won a World Cup downhill. He was one of the "Crazy Canucks", a group of Canadian downhill racers who rose to prominence on the World Cup circuit in the late 1970s.
The downhill race was held on Friday, 7 February, and the start was below the summit of Kreuzjoch at an elevation of 1,580 metres (5,184 ft). The finish was at the bottom station of the Kreuzeckbahn tramway at 760 m (2,493 ft) for a vertical drop of 820 m (2,690 ft) and a course length of 3.300 km (2.05 mi).
He was the first non-European to win both the Austrian downhill Hahnenkamm at Kitzbühel, [6] [7] and the Swiss race Lauberhorn at Wengen. [ 8 ] [ 9 ] These two victories complemented his 1978 win at Les Houches near Chamonix , France, [ 10 ] in the Arlberg-Kandahar , ski racing's oldest classic event.

[2] He competed in many forms of cycling including cross-country racing and Mountain bike trials but, was most notable for his downhill mountain bike racing career. Herbold was inducted into the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame in 1996. [2]
