Louvre, Paris Portrait of the Artist Holding a Thistle (or Eryngium ) is an oil painting on parchment pasted on canvas by German artist Albrecht Dürer . Painted in 1493, it is the earliest of Dürer's painted self-portraits and has been identified as one of the first self-portraits painted by a Northern artist. [ 1 ]
Philippe Pot was born in 1428 at the Château de la Rochepot, outside Dijon in today's France. The region was then part of the Duchy of Burgundy and his father, Jacques, was an adviser and senior official to Duke Philip the Good. [4] [5] Pot was raised and educated at the Burgundian court. He was a scholar and bibliophile. [4]
