Scan Furniture was a co-operative furniture chain that operated six stores in the metropolitan Baltimore-Washington, D.C. area selling modern Scandinavian furniture. Unusually, it was founded in 1938 as a grocery store in Greenbelt, Maryland, which became the Greenbelt Cooperative in 1940.
Traditional pieces like these were no longer made as of 1938, to make way for modern designs. Modern styles, designed by T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbing in the 1940s and 50s, were inspired by Scandinavian design. George Nakashima's "Origin Collection," was inspired by Japanese and Shaker furniture. The collection consisted of bedroom and dining room pieces.
In the early 1950s, modern Danish furniture design also began to attract attention abroad and especially in the US. Together with four other manufacturers of Wegner furniture, Carl Hansen & Søn established a joint sales company, Salesco, which was responsible for exhibitions and marketing abroad, including on the furniture fairs in Cologne .
