Coyhaique (Spanish pronunciation:), also spelled Coihaique in Patagonia, is the capital city of both the Coyhaique Province and the Aysén Region of Chile. Founded by settlers in 1929, it is a young city.
As a province, Coyhaique is a second-level administrative division of Chile, which is further sub-divided into two communes (comunas), Coyhaique and Lago Verde, each of which is governed by a municipality headed by an alcalde. The province is administered by a presidentially appointed governor.
The capital of the region is Coyhaique, the region's former namesake. The region's current namesake is the former President of Chile , General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo . The landscape is marked by several glaciations that formed many lakes, channels and fjords .
