"Miracle on Evergreen Terrace" is the tenth episode of the ninth season of the American animated television series The Simpsons. It originally aired on Fox in the United States on December 21, 1997. Bart accidentally ruins Christmas for the Simpson family by burning down the tree and all their presents.
In this episode, Bart and his mother run from a hunter, the Simpsons work for a wealthy family, a tree comes to life, Maggie is told a scary story about Bart, and Lisa investigates when her classmates die. Susan Egan and Maurice LaMarche guest starred. Former basketball player Tree Rollins appeared as himself. The episode received mixed reviews.
Homer promises to buy a large Christmas tree, but instead spends most of the money on a talking astrolabe for himself, meaning that the only Christmas tree Homer can buy with the leftover money is a cheap, dry, twig-like tree that catches fire if rubbed; after hearing the astrolabe talk, the family are disappointed by his selfish behavior.
The episode opens with the Simpsons in their Halloween costumes with Homer dressed as Bender, Maggie as Charlie Chaplin, Lisa as a recycle-bin and Bart as a pterodactyl visiting a Christmas tree lot early on Halloween, only to be locked in and ambushed by Sideshow Bob, the leprechaun from Treehouse of Horror XII, the ghost of Frank Grimes, and Kang.
This convinces Burns and Smithers to return the presents to the town. On Christmas Day, Homer and Marge snuggle together just before the kids open the returned presents, and they go to the basement to enjoy some time together, just after Grampa takes a picture to bless everyone with "Merry Christmas from the Simpsons!".
The show runner of The Simpsons at the time, Bill Oakley, thinks this is one of the most "beautifully" directed episodes of the show. He called the "hand-colouring" very "vivid" and "bright".
