Google Fi would be faster, because they don't throttle you to 128kbps, but Google charges $10/GB vs. $0 for T-Mobile (assuming the plan supports free international data.) The larger problem, as Androided pointed out earlier, is that I'm not aware of a single T-Mobile branded hotspot device that works globally.
This has to do with the frequencies T-Mobile uses, which don't penetrate buildings as well as the competition. However, most places have wi-fi and I will happily save the $$ every month. Also, T-Mobile has been investing heavily in its coverage issues ever since the AT&T merger was called off, so it keeps getting better.
I noticed on the most recent T-Mobile coverage maps they are showing the whole Wausau, WI metro area as no service (white) now. This is really troubling. Wausau is the largest metro area by far in all of north central WI. They used to use 310-640 Airadigm a.k.a. Airfire Mobile for roaming but that network went dark about 2 years ago.
Sprint has a PCS network there, and it's mainly along US 41 & US 52 (where most people live nearby, which would be good enough coverage). Starke County Indiana has coverage mainly along US 30 heading toward Plymouth, and eventually Fort Wayne. T-Mobile phones hold onto a weak signal in Knox & North Judson.

Both carriers offer native coverage but AT&T has much better coverage in PR than T-Mobile. Your wife/you should be ok. T-Mo does not have band 12 in PR but AT&T does have band 17 (12). This also applies to Vieques and Culebra. T-Mobile's coverage in the next couple of years should improve quite a bit as they got 600MHZ spectrum for all of PR.
Here is an intersection by me where T Mobile shows 4G LTE. Here is a screenshot of me in that EXACT same spot. If you look at my service bars I get one bar of EDGE. This happens in more 5 locations. I did check and my iPhone supports all of the bands required for T-mobile in my area.
iPhone. Jan 12, 2019. #1. My parents are traveling on a cruise in a couple of weeks. They are new to T-Mobile after overpaying att for years. They are on the 55 and over T-Mobile one plan. They are paying for WiFi on the cruise. I don’t know how great WiFi is on a cruise while on the ocean. But if the WiFi coverage is decent can they use WiFi ...
Not all areas are covered the same by all carriers. In general, rural coverage, IMHO, on T-Mobile is still behind that of AT&T and Verizon... But not in all rural locations. 2. T-mobile currently doesn't have great 5g that isn't much better than 4G LTE, and in some cases, performance is actually worse due to low band and having about 1 in 8 ...
Yes, you lose LTE but T-Mobile's HSPA+ is quite fast and still works better than Verizon's 3G. They are working on improving the area - just a few months ago there was little LTE on I78 beyond Rt 100.
