TEAC is known for its audio equipment, and was a primary manufacturer of high-end audio equipment in the 1970s and 1980s. During that time, TEAC produced reel-to-reel machines, cassette decks, CD players, turntables and amplifiers. TEAC produced an audio cassette with tape hubs that resembled reel-to-reel tape reels in appearance.
Cassette decks soon came into widespread use and were designed variously for professional applications, home audio systems, and for mobile use in cars, as well as portable recorders. From the mid-1970s to the late 1990s the cassette deck was the preferred music source for the automobile.
TASCAM is the professional audio division of TEAC Corporation, headquartered in Santa Fe Springs, California.TASCAM established the Home Recording phenomenon by creating the "Project Studio" and is credited as the inventor of the Portastudio, the first cassette-based multi-track home studio recorders.
Tascam Portastudio 244, 1982. The first Portastudio, the TEAC 144, was introduced on September 22, 1979 at the AES Convention in New York City. [5] The 144 combined a 4-channel mixer with pan, treble, and bass on each input with a cassette recorder capable of recording four tracks in one direction at 3¾ inches per second (double the normal cassette playback speed) in a self-contained unit ...
Reel-to-reel preceded the development of the compact cassette with tape 0.15 inches (3.8 mm) wide moving at 1 + 7 ⁄ 8 inches per second (4.8 cm/s). By writing the same audio signal across more tape, reel-to-reel systems give much greater fidelity at the cost of much larger tapes.
Some typical cassette deck frequency response curves showing the effects of different bias settings are provided in the relevant figure. Time constant of replay equalization (often shortened to EQ) for Type I tapes equals 120 μs, as per the Philips specification. The time constant for Type II, III and IV tapes is set at a lower value of 70 μs.
Elcaset recorder released by Sony under the WEGA brand. The cassette itself looks similar to a compact cassette, only larger—about twice the size. [4] Like the earlier RCA tape cartridge, it contained 1 ⁄ 4 inch (6.4 mm) tape running at 3 + 3 ⁄ 4 inches per second (9.5 cm/s), twice the width and twice the speed of a compact cassette, providing greater frequency response and dynamic range ...
The thickest tape normally used in cassettes is about 16-18 μm in thickness, and is used in C60 cassettes and in shorter lengths such as the C46. As the standard tape speed for a compact cassette is 1 + 7 ⁄ 8 inches per second (4.762 cm/s) and a C60 cassette records 30 minutes per side, a C60 cassette in theory holds 281 + 1 ⁄ 4 ft (85.73 ...
