FLAC (/ f l æ k /; Free Lossless Audio Codec) is an audio coding format for lossless compression of digital audio, developed by the Xiph.Org Foundation, and is also the name of the free software project producing the FLAC tools, the reference software package that includes a codec implementation.
An audio coding format [1] (or sometimes audio compression format) is a content representation format for storage or transmission of digital audio (such as in digital television, digital radio and in audio and video files). Examples of audio coding formats include MP3, AAC, Vorbis, FLAC, and Opus.

This extension is also used by Apple for lossy AAC audio data in an MP4 container (same container, different audio encoding).

[5] Apple uses this new little-endian AIFF type as its standard on macOS. When a file is imported to or exported from iTunes in "AIFF" format, it is actually AIFF-C/sowt that is being used. When audio from an ...
An audio format is a medium for sound recording and reproduction. The term is applied to both the physical recording media and the recording formats of the audio content —in computer science it is often limited to the audio file format , but its wider use usually refers to the physical method used to store the data.
