During the early 19th century, several ornithologies were written in English, [16] and Edward Lear's main contributions to the development of bird painting were to concentrate on a single bird group, in his case the parrots, paint mainly from live birds rather than stuffed specimens or skins, and use a large page size.
The painting depicts a natural philosopher, a forerunner of the modern scientist, recreating one of Robert Boyle's air pump experiments, in which a bird is deprived of air, before a varied group of onlookers. The bird is perched on the upper ring, to which its leg is attached by a fine chain. [7] [8] The painting is signed and dated "C fabritivs 1654" at the bottom. [1]
