As mentioned in the Basic Law of the State (de facto constitution), the Council of Oman has some legislative and oversight powers. The Council of Ministers (the main executive branch) must have to refer draft laws to the Assembly, which has to approve or amend it within a maximum of three months from the date of referring.
Oman nationality law determines who is a citizen of Oman and who is not. Foreigners are rarely given citizenship. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] [ 3 ] Like the majority of Arab countries, Oman does not allow dual citizenship , except by the Royal Decree of the Sultan .
Oman is an absolute monarchy, with the Sultan's word having the force of law. The judiciary branch is subordinate to the Sultan. According to Oman's constitution, Sharia law is one of the sources of legislation. Sharia court departments within the civil court system are responsible for family-law matters, such as divorce and inheritance.
