The Savannah metropolitan area is located in the Coastal Georgia region, and is its most populous urban area. The three counties comprising the metropolitan area make up a total area of 1,569 square miles (4,060 km 2), roughly the size of the U.S. state of Rhode Island at 1,545 square miles (4,000 km 2).
In 1947, Georgia was a single numbering plan area (NPA) with area code 404. In 1954, 912 was assigned to its southern and central areas. The state operated with two area codes until May 3, 1992, when area code 706 was created for the two separate areas outside of the metro Atlanta area.

The hotel was constructed by Eleazer Early of Charleston, South Carolina, to a design by William Jay, [2] and completed in 1821 as the City Hotel. It was built on land purchased by his wife, Jane, four years earlier [2] and was the first hotel in Savannah. [1] It had "33 rooms, exclusive of the bar."
