Dire wolf jumping and climbing. [D&D 5e] I’m planning an encounter that will involve a pack of dire wolves, as well as some cliffs/ridges of varying steepness and height. I think it’s going to be fun, but I’m a little stymied when trying to prep the details. I suppose the “height” of a wolf is it’s length. So far so good.
No idea why they stopped. In D&D, dire creatures are usually very large and often aggressive. amglasgow. • 4 yr. ago. Dire wolves were a real thing, but while there were many prehistoric animals that were similar to modern animals but much larger, none of them are called "dire". It makes more sense to call them by their names, like "cave bear ...
Edit: Dire Wolves have a 50' base movement and can Dash to 100', so kiting via Expeditious Retreat requires that the character either [A] exceeds the wolves' base movement (i.e., fast race or Custom / Vuman with Mobile + Longstrider + 2 levels of Monk = 55+' base movement) OR [B] have a base movement of 35+' and burn some proportion of turns on ...

If they are using animal handling checks and speak with animals, I'd allow it. But you need to severely limit the control over the wolf or wolves. And don't buff them beyond their normal stats. If you can hire mercenaries, you can train some wolves. If they put out the effort to justify getting them for free. 1.
An adult dire wolf is typically about 9 feet long and weighs roughly 800 pounds. So a hand is about 10 cm. Actually, give all imperial lengths in hand, it converts a lot easier. Well, on the large end, a wolf is 16 hands long, and 8.5 hands tall. They average about 60 kg at these dimensions.
One attack that has the chance to knock prone vs two attacks. Dire wolves have +4 Stealth and Pack Tactics. Dire wolves have better Dex saves (+2 vs. +0) Brown bears have +4 STR and +3 CON vs. the dire wolf's +3 and +2, respectively. The only advantage I see the brown bear having is one extra attack, slightly better STR and CON, and a climbing ...
Still, a giant dire wolf might fight well into CoS and your PCs can polymorph into it once they meet one, so I changed some things. If you use the statblock above, note that the CR of the creature is actually higher (I forgot to include that the Frightful Presence increases the effective HP by 25%, so if you take 2 less hit dice, i.e. 147 HP ...
In the forest during the one shot I was gonna have them choose between pressing on throughout the night (leads to dire wolf encounter) or set up camp (an orc ambush encounter). For the dire wolf fight I was gonna give them five dire wolves to fight. And for the orc ambush I was going to have them fight eight orcs and an orc war chief.
Divine Wolves are originally from Kenbe, a realm among the Outer Planes. During the day, Kenbe is similar to the material plane. Key differences include the perpetually blooming forests and the completely circular rainbow that hangs like a halo in the sky. As the sun sets, the land becomes a nightscape of dancing lights.
