The highest grade achievable is an A. An FSMQ Unit at Advanced level is roughly equivalent to a single AS module with candidates receiving 10 UCAS points for an A grade. Intermediate level is equivalent to a GCSE in Mathematics. Coursework is often a key part of the FSMQ, but is sometimes omitted depending on the examining board.
Initially, the mathematics papers were divided between three tiers: higher (able), intermediate (less able) and foundation (near unable), to cover different mathematical abilities. The higher level corresponded to grades A–C, the intermediate level to grades C–E, and the foundation level to grades E–G.
The 'S' level Higher Mathematics papers, for example, were not marked unless at least 75 (Distinction) was secured in the 'A' level pure mathematics and/or applied mathematics papers. The marks were normalised, but usually completion of 2 or 3 questions of 10 on the paper offered was sufficient to secure a distinction.
