First Impressions Beretta A400 Xcel Sporting 30" KO 12 gauge. Picked up my new Xcel Tuesday. Went straight to a sporting clay range and shot about 75 shells through it. Followed Wednesday with 125 shells on the skeet range. I basically bought it for a backup to my 694. (and just because I've wanted a Beretta semi-auto since the first time I ...
The New A400 xcel sporting - suggestions for Beretta. So 500 or so rounds through my new shotgun, here are my suggestions to take this shotgun from good to great. Or great to amazing. 1) Upgrade the bolt handle and EZ lever bolt release from heavy plastic to quality metal.

The L4S is lighter than the A400 although you can add weight to the L4S easily. As stated above, not enough reason to part with the A400 that you are shooting well. skar and Shortbucket.

As long as you know where your gun shoots it isn't a problem. Like you I prefer a flatter shooting gun. Therefore I use a field gun for all my uses. My target looks the same where it is trap ...
Xcel has extended chokes vs Xplor flush chokes. The A400 Xplor Unico is the 3 1/2" gun, the Xplor is 3" same as Excel. IMHO anyone who is left handed and wants an A400 for clays should get the A400 Xplor, you can add weight to your liking. It also has a more appealing color over the Excel.

QUOTE: "I have heard nothing about barrel failures. I shoot an A400 Xcel sporting for Clays and see an awful lot of these on the Sporting Clays courses and have never heard anything but good feedback regarding them. I would guess that the information given to you is bogus." Agree 100%, and I have fired 5k+ rounds through my A-400 Sporting.
That gives me a LOP of about 15.5" I don't have any added weight. They balance just fine for me. That gun is also available with a 32" barrel, if you're interested. Bigfoot62. The other option is a "match" trigger job, where they replace some factory parts with their custom springs, hammer, etc.
To me SX3/Maxus wins out over the A400. I have both the Maxus Sporting 30" and the A400 Xcel Sporting 30" non-kick-off. I like both guns a lot, and they both do a great job. I only have about 400 rounds through the A400, so not really enough to give a complete eval on it, but I like the way it shoots and feels.
