Marsh Island is 20 miles (32 km) east to west and 11 miles (18 km) north to south. The island has many named and unnamed lakes and bayous such as Lake Hawkins, Hawkins Bayou, Lake Tom, Worm Bayou, Lake Blanc, Scat Lake, Lake Michael, Gordy Lake, Lake Sand, Oyster Lake, Oyster Branch, West Oyster Branch, and East Oyster Branch on the east side of the island.
Marsh Island (French: Grosse-Île-du-Vermillion [2]) is an island off the coast of southern Louisiana in the United States. There is no permanent human population at the time of the 2000 census. The entire island is a wildlife sanctuary managed by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) as the Marsh Island Wildlife Refuge.
The visitor center opened in 1994 [1] and is located south of Lake Charles on Louisiana Highway 27, 11 miles south of Holmwood, Louisiana. The center's exhibits focus on the birds and other wildlife found in the refuge, and the plant and animal life and different types of ecosystems.
