The original US Ural importer specified SAE 20W50 because "everyone" knows that Urals are like BMWs and airheads used SAE 20W50. Modern multigrade gear oils weren't available when the original recommendations were made, so SAE 20W50 was used in the gearbox as SAE 90 was to heavy, and winter grades weren't readily available.
