It was nominated along with another White Castle restaurant, formerly at 1097 Cleveland Avenue in Columbus, in a group nomination. [3] The latter restaurant was moved to a new location at the Columbus Zoo in 1984. [4] In March 1986, the Columbus Historic Resources Commission approved White Castle's plan to dismantle the building.
It is a contributing property to the Columbus Near East Side District, a national historic district established in 1978. [4] The building's restaurant occupies a 3,300 sq ft (310 m 2) space, including an indoor dining room, beer garden, brewery space, and front and back patios. [5] The dining room has large wooden communal tables.
Over its life, the building housed over 45 different tenants. Some of the most notable were the Columbus-New Albany-Johnstown Traction Company, an early interurban streetcar company, the Eugene Gallagher cigar company, the Voisinet Garment Company, Pappas' Philadelphia Restaurant, and the Sportsman's Grill Restaurant.
