The opera house was designed by Frank Matcham, and is in gritstone with pilasters, and Welsh-slate roofs. There are two storeys and attics, and a symmetrical entrance front of five bays . The central entrance is flanked by fluted and banded Doric columns, the adjacent bays have round-headed doorways, and in the outer bays are canted doorways.
