The books were attributed to Dane Hartman, a pen name created for the series and used collectively by several different writers employed by Warner. Authors writing as Hartman included martial arts authority Ric Meyers and Leslie Alan Horvitz, who primarily specialized in science fiction and nonfiction .
In 1942 or 1943, Warriner was approached by a publisher's sales representative about revising a grammar book dating from 1898. Warriner instead began writing chapters for a new book, which was published by Harcourt Brace as Warriner's Handbook of English, aimed at grades 9 and 10. This book was followed by a volume aimed at 11th and 12th graders.
In a 1999 introduction to the novel's republication by New York Review Books, Alison Lurie wrote that "a woman who refuses the 'Aunt Lolly' role is, in the view of conventional society, a kind of witch, even if she does no evil," tying the novel to Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own, noting that Warner "had spoken for [such women] first." Warner has written more than 50 nonfiction books aimed at parents and children on topics ranging from child development to party planning to games and activities.
