The Oregon Sentinel was the first newspaper in southern Oregon. It was published in Jacksonville , Oregon from 1855 to 1888. [ 1 ] [ 2 ] The Oregon Sentinel was founded by pioneer William G. T'Vault , [ 2 ] and was initially named the Table Rock Sentinel , changing its title in 1858.

The earliest newspaper in Oregon was the Oregon Spectator, published in Oregon City from 1846, by a press association headed by George Abernethy. [2] This was joined in November 1850 by the Milwaukie Western Star and two partisan papers – the Whig Oregonian, published in Portland beginning on December 4, 1850, and the Democratic Statesman, launched in Oregon City in March 1851. William Green [1] T'Vault (1806–1869) was a pioneer of the Oregon Country and the first editor of the first newspaper published in what is now the United States west of the Missouri River. T'Vault led a wagon train of 300 that arrived in Oregon in 1845, after traveling on the Meek Cutoff, a branch of the Oregon Trail.
