Swakopmund is a popular beach resort and characterized by 19th century German colonial architecture. The city was founded in 1892 as the main harbour for German South West Africa . Buildings in the city include the Altes Gefängnis , a prison designed by Heinrich Bause in 1909.

At the Swakopmund Salt Company, teams had to enter the pink-colored artificial lake, where they would dig up salt crystals from the lake bed. Once they had harvested 25 kg (55 lb) of salt, they would then add this to a cart that already had salt, bringing the total to 50 kg (110 lb), and had to push this cart along a 1 km (0.62 mi) route.
