Morrison County was established in 1856. At its foundation, $8,000 was issued from the county in the form of bonds to build a courthouse. Only one room could be used by 1860 and by 1869, the courtroom was finished. This courthouse, however, was a frame building and proved inadequate for the county's needs.

Morrill Township was organized in 1881 as Oakwood Township but renamed in 1885 after Ashby C. Morrill, a county official. [3] In 1903, the eastern half of the township was taken to form Lakin Township. The unincorporated communities of Morrill and Ramey are included in the remaining portion of the township.
