Microsoft says Matteson renamed the font Aptos “after his favorite unincorporated town in Santa Cruz, California, whose widely ranging landscape and climate epitomizes the font’s versatility.”
The font was named Aptos by its designer, Steve Matteson, after a town in Santa Cruz, where Microsoft said the “widely ranging landscape and climate epitomizes the font’s versatility”.
It was released in 2023 as the new default font for the Microsoft Office suite, replacing the previously used Calibri font. [4] Aptos, as well as its siblings Aptos Display, Aptos Narrow, Aptos Mono (a monospaced font), and Aptos Serif are available to Microsoft 365 subscribers via Microsoft's cloud service. [5]
Calibri is part of the ClearType Font Collection, a suite of fonts from various designers released with Windows Vista. [7] All start with the letter C to reflect that they were designed to work well with Microsoft's ClearType text rendering system, a text rendering engine designed to make text clearer to read on liquid-crystal display monitors.
Midway through the life cycle of Office 2021, in July 2023 – after two years of evaluating five newly commissioned fonts – [14] the default font across all Office applications was changed to Aptos. [15] [16] This marked the first time since Office 2007 that Microsoft had changed default fonts.
