Three Norfolk Southern freight trains pass each other on the Horseshoe Curve in 2006. Until reaching Altoona, the Pittsburgh Line is a double-track mainline from Duncannon. Once at Altoona, a third track is added for the climb up the Allegheny Mountains.
This connection track was later double tracked to eliminate bottlenecking traffic. Ownership of the line was passed on to Norfolk Southern after the Conrail split between CSX Transportation and Norfolk Southern in 1999.
