Mount Horeb (/ ˈ h ɔːr ɛ b /; Hebrew: הַר חֹרֵב Har Ḥōrēḇ; Greek in the Septuagint: Χωρήβ, Chōrēb; Latin in the Vulgate: Horeb) is the mountain at which the Ten Commandments were given to Moses by God, according to the Book of Deuteronomy in the Hebrew Bible.
Mount Hor (Hebrew: הֹר הָהָר , Hōr hāHār) is the name given in the Hebrew Bible to two distinct mountains. One borders the land of Edom in the area south of the Dead Sea , and the other is by the Mediterranean Sea at the Northern border of Israel .
All locations have proponents, but Gabal Horeb in the southern peninsula has been the traditional location since the 4th century AD (but notably not before). The Old Testament prophet Elijah, according to 1 Kings 19, is the last person recorded in the Bible as visiting Mount Sinai.

Mount Hor is usually associated with the mountain near Petra in Jordan, known in Arabic as Jabal Hārūn (Aaron's Mountain), upon the summit of which a mosque was built in the 14th century. [ 9 ] [ 10 ] Indeed, Josephus and Eusebius both describe its location above the city of Petra.
The Bible locates Kadesh, or Kadesh Barnea, as an oasis south of Canaan, west of the Aravah and east of the Brook of Egypt. [7] It is 11 days' march by way of Mount Seir from Horeb (Deuteronomy 1:2). By the late nineteenth century, as many as eighteen sites had been proposed for biblical Kadesh. [8]
The Village of Mount Horeb is located in southwestern Dane County. The geographic boundary of the Driftless Area runs down the center of the county, creating an east/west topographical division. Mount Horeb is also located near Blue Mound State Park, which also has access to the Military Ridge State Trail.
