Thompson Lake is the largest lake in the Little Androscoggin watershed. The north end of the lake overflows into the Little Androscoggin River through the village of Oxford. The lake forms the boundary between Otisfield to the west and Oxford and Poland to the northeast and southeast, respectively. The southern tip of the lake is in Casco.
Oxford is drained by the Little Androscoggin River. Thompson Lake, the community's largest, is approximately 8 miles (13 km) long. The town is served by state routes 26 and 121. It borders the towns of Paris to the north, Hebron to the northeast, Norway to the northwest, Poland to the southeast, and Otisfield to the southwest.
The Western Lakes and Mountains region spans most of Maine's western border with New Hampshire. A small part of the scenic White Mountain National Forest is located in this area. The region consists of Oxford County , Androscoggin County , Franklin County , as well as northern York and interior Cumberland counties.

It continues north along the west side of Pleasant Lake and Thompson Lake before entering Oxford, where it turns to the east to meet SR 26 just south of the Oxford County Regional Airport. SR 121 briefly joins SR 26 in a wrong-way concurrency before splitting off southeast towards Mechanic Falls (continually signed as "north").
