The 1860s-built 188-foot (57 m) tall Parish Church of St Luke the Evangelist dominates the town centre and skyline. Heywood was the birthplace of Peter Heywood, the magistrate who aided the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot, whose family seat was Heywood Hall. Heywood has a station on the East Lancashire heritage railway.
Sir Thomas Percival Heywood, 2nd Baronet (15 March 1823 – 26 October 1897). Heywood was the son of Sir Benjamin Heywood, 1st Baronet. He retired from the banking business set up by his father and settled, with his wife Margaret, at the family's summer home at Dove Leys, near Denstone in North Staffordshire.

Oliver Heywood (9 September 1825 – 1892) was an English banker and philanthropist. Born in Irlam O'Th' Height, Lancashire, the son of Benjamin Heywood, and educated at Eton College, Heywood joined the family business, Heywood's Bank in the 1840s.
John Heywood was born on 19 May 1787. By the time of his birth the Heywood family had established themselves as one of the most prominent Manx families, being descended from a former Governor of the Isle of Man, Robert Heywood, who arrived on the Island from Heywood, Lancashire, following his appointment to the governorship in 1678 by William Stanley, 9th Earl of Derby.
Benjamin Heywood was born on 12 December 1793 in St Ann's Square, Manchester. He was the grandson of Thomas Percival, the son of Nathaniel Heywood and Ann Percival, the brother to Thomas Heywood and James Heywood, and the nephew to Samuel Heywood. He lived at "Claremont" to the north west of the city centre in Irlams o' th' Height. [1]
