Artistic swimming (known as synchronised swimming until 2017) has been an event at the Summer Olympics since the 1984 Games.The current Olympic program consists of a Women's Duet event and a Mixed Team event.
For the duet, the highest-ranked NOC from each of the five continental meets that did not have a qualified team received a spot, with the remaining NOCs competing for the three remaining spots through the 2024 Worlds. All ten NOCs eligible to compete in the team event were required to select two members to form a duet. [6]

In 2005, it was renamed free combination. In 2007, solo, duet and team events were split between technical and free routines. In 2015, the mixed duet (technical and free) were added to the competition program. In 2019, the highlight routine was added into the competition program and it was renamed into acrobatic routine in 2023.
