Four fledgling settlements were considered as the seat of government (Vevay, Little York [present-day Florence], Troy [present-day Patriot], and Center Square). [5] Center Square was nearest the geographic center and was the presumed site, but Vevay carried the day. Several early settlers were originally from Switzerland.
Over the years it has housed a saddlery, the local post office, a tavern, the offices of the Vevay Newspaper, and a theatre, which it became in 1926. It was abandoned in 1955 and sat vacant until 1983, when Historic Vevay, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation was formed to purchase and restore the building.
SR 156 is mostly a rural two-lane highway, passing through farmland and residential properties. SR 156 was first designated as a state road in 1931. In 1930 the Indiana State Highway Commission authorized a state road from SR 56 near Vevay to Versailles. [7] [8] This state road was designated as SR 129 in 1931.[8] [9] Paving of the original section was completed between 1965 and 1967.
