The Resurrection of Christ is a triptych painting in oil on panel by Peter Paul Rubens, of 1611–1612, that is still in the Cathedral of Our Lady in Antwerp, Belgium. The panels were hinged, with the two wings painted on both sides, by this date a rather old-fashioned format.
In the center of the painting John the Baptist, wearing an animal skin, is standing on the banks of the River Jordan. He points towards the figure of Jesus in the distance, approaching the scene. To the left stands the young John the Apostle, behind him St. Peter, and further on Andrew the Apostle and Nathanael.
The gospels describe how, after his initial capture, Jesus was brought before Caiaphas – a high priest in the Jewish Sanhedrin. [4] Honthorst depicts the moment that Caiaphas asks Jesus if he truly claims to be God. The scene takes place at night. Jesus and Caiaphas are separated by a table upon which a candle provides the only light.
The apostle Peter has gone after Jesus, where a servant woman had recognised him as one of Jesus's followers. Peter in a white robe gestures his denial, as two armed guards observe to the left.
