Harold Emery Lauder is sixteen years old and lives in Ogunquit, Maine, at the beginning of the novel. He is the younger brother of Goldsmith's best friend, Amy Lauder, and is a social outcast at Ogunquit High School, where he served as an editor for its literary magazine and wrote a number of strange stories.
