The Principles and Standards for School Mathematics was developed by the NCTM. The NCTM's stated intent was to improve mathematics education. The contents were based on surveys of existing curriculum materials, curricula and policies from many countries, educational research publications, and government agencies such as the U.S. National Science Foundation. [3]
The tests are used only to support teacher's judgement; it is the teacher assessment which is recorded as the statutory outcome. Statutory assessment takes place in reading, writing, mathematics and science. For each subject, teachers use the available evidence to reach one of a number of judgements, based on the national assessment framework.
The term is defined in The Education (Northern Ireland) Order 2006 as "the period beginning at the same time as the next school year after the end of key stage 1 and ending at the same time as the school year in which the majority of pupils in his class complete three school years in that key stage". [4]
The National Curriculum for England is the statutory standard of school subjects, lesson content, and attainment levels for primary and secondary schools in England. It is compulsory for local authority-maintained schools, but also often followed by independent schools and state-funded academies.
The content of these standards is based heavily on a specific model of learning, constructivism (learning theory). [4] Like reform mathematics, [5] which is distinguished by an emphasis on building on what a child already knows and understands, the standards intend to update the methods of science education to achieve greater effectiveness with children.
Early Years Foundation Stage Profile is completed by the child's teacher at the end of their Reception year 1 5-7 2 1–2 KS1 SATs, Phonics and Reading Check (taken in Year 1 but may be retaken, if the required standard isn't reached, in Year 2) 2 7-11 4 3–6 SATs, eleven plus exam (generally only for Grammar school entry) 3 11-14 3 7–9
