Today, it corresponds to the Bastar division of Chhattisgarh. The state covered an area of 33,830 km 2 (13,060 square miles) and had its capital at Jagdalpur. In 1901, it had a population of 306,501. It is a tribal-dominated region, the main tribes being the Madia, Muria, Dorla, Duruwa, Halba and Bhatra.

Scheduled Tribes make up 30.62% of the population. The tribals are an important part of the state population and mainly inhabit the dense forests of Bastar and other districts of south Chhattisgarh. The percentage increase in the population of the scheduled list of tribals during the 2001–2011 decade had been at the rate of 18.23%.
The tribe have local divisions known as Bastarha, Chhattisgarhia and Marethia, according as they live in Bastar, Chhattisgarh, or Bhandāra and the other Maharashtra Districts. The last two groups intermarry, so only the Bastar Halbas form a really separate subcaste. They are also divided into two groups of pure and mixed Halbas.
The Bastar rebellion of 1910, better known in the tribal belt as the bhumkal, was a partly successful armed struggle against colonial forest policy that denied the Madia and Muria Gonds of Bastar, along with other tribes in the region, access to the forest for their livelihoods.
