Mathura (Hindi pronunciation: [mɐ.t̪ʰʊ.ɾäː] ⓘ) is a city and the administrative headquarters of Mathura district in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.It is located 57.6 kilometres (35.8 mi) north of Agra, and 146 kilometres (91 mi) south-east of Delhi; about 14.5 kilometres (9.0 mi) from the town of Vrindavan, and 22 kilometres (14 mi) from Govardhan.
It was built to de-congest the older Delhi–Agra national highway or Mathura Road. The expressway saw an investment ₹ 12,839 crore (US$1.5 billion) and was inaugurated on 9 August 2012 by then Chief Minister of UP Akhilesh Yadav. [1] [2] A total of 13 service roads of about 168 km were built for local commuters to access the expressway.

The 29 mi (47 km)-long Hath Road–Mathura Cantt line was opened in 1875 by Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway. It was transferred to the North Eastern Railway in 1952. The Mathura–Kasganj line was converted from 1,000 mm ( 3 ft 3 + 3 ⁄ 8 in )-wide metre gauge to 5 ft 6 in ( 1,676 mm ) broad gauge in 2009.
