    Washington blamed the low compensation rate—originally $2 a month—for the shortage of nurses. Congress increased nurses’ pay to $4 a month in 1776 and, a year later, to $8 a month. Even this rate was still low, however, especially when compared to the $40 a month earned by surgeons and apothecaries. 1793.
