Opened in 1854, it is the largest government hospital in Penang as well as the state's oldest. The healthcare centre also serves as the tertiary referral hospital for northern Malaysia.
Touted as a "tertiary care facility" within Seberang Perai, the hospital began construction in 2018. The first phase of the hospital was completed in 2022 at a cost of RM430 million, containing a total of 200 beds. An extension is being built which will expand the hospital's capacity to 330 beds by 2024.
