Louis Rodolphe Salis [1] [full citation needed] (29 May 1851 – 20 March 1897) was the creator, host and owner of the Le Chat Noir ('The Black Cat') cabaret (known briefly in 1881 at its beginning as Cabaret Artistique) in the Montmartre district of Paris.
Le Chat Noir (French pronunciation: [lə ʃa nwaʁ]; French for "The Black Cat") was a 19th century entertainment establishment in the bohemian Montmartre district of Paris. It was opened on 18 November 1881 at 84 Boulevard de Rochechouart by impresario Rodolphe Salis , and closed in 1897 not long after Salis' death.

When designing Black Orchid, artist Tony DeZuñiga took inspiration from Cymbidium canaliculatum, a plant with dark purple petals, and Black Condor.He stated that he "read the character description and [recalled that] in the ’40s there was this character called the Black Condor, but [since] that was a male superhero, [he] took some ideas and revised [it] to a female form."
