Stoughton / ˈ s t oʊ t ən / (official name: Town of Stoughton) is a town in Norfolk County, Massachusetts, United States. The population was 29,281 at the 2020 census . The town is located approximately 17 miles (27 km) from Boston , 31 miles (50 km) from Providence, Rhode Island , and 35 miles (56 km) from Cape Cod .
Included in this area are six houses and two churches, as well as the town library, the district's only civic building. It is a modest Georgian Revival building, constructed in 1914 with funding support from philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. [3] The oldest building in the district is the Dennett House, dating to about 1753.
The building housed the library as well as the Stoughton Historical Society at 6 Park Street. In 1969 a modern library was built to meet the needs of the town at nearby 84 Park Street. The single story masonry Renaissance Revival structure was built in 1903. It was Stoughton's first purpose-built library building, and was built on the site of its first schoolhouse. The building was designed by Walter Atherton and given to the town by Lucius Clapp, a local schoolteacher and businessman. [2]
