Silver Springs, a natural spring, and the park's namesake. Silver Springs State Fish and Wildlife Area covers 1,350 acres (550 ha) and includes four distinct bodies of water, two artificial lakes, the Fox River, and Silver Springs. [5] The larger of the two lakes, Loon Lake, covers 21 acres (8.5 ha) and has 0.9 miles (1.4 km) of shoreline.
The Old McHenry County Courthouse faces the Woodstock public square. The Italianate structure was built out of brick with limestone trim. With four identical, 20-by-44-square-foot (1.9 m 2 × 4.1 m 2) wings around a 44-square-foot (4.1 m 2) core, the building resembles a Greek cross. The building stands two stories tall with a brick basement.
In 1937 the Todd School campus consisted of an area of Woodstock bound by McHenry Avenue, Seminary Avenue, Northampton Street and Mansfield Avenue. [2] In addition the school purchased in 1904 20 acres (81,000 m 2) of woods 1 mile (1.6 km) north of the school grounds.
The core of the property was Silver Pool Farm, a 450-acre (180 ha) farm settled in the late 1700s by the Williams family from the Tidewater area of Virginia, which remained in that family for over 150 years. [2] The area was first surveyed in 1788 and the original Silver Pool farm was settled by Daniel Williams, a descendant of Roger Williams.
It is named after Mrs. Verda Dierzen, a Woodstock woman who founded the school and taught throughout the district. Dierzen died in April 2008, at age 91.
