A cook-off is a cooking competition where the contestants each prepare dishes for judging either by a select group of judges or by the general public. Cook-offs are very popular among competitors (such as restaurants) with very similar dishes, such as chili, and serves as a way to decide which recipe is the best for that particular dish.
The first Texas Chili Cook-off was held in 1994. [1] Attendance at the event was under 100 and only 8 chili teams competed. Today, the event draws upwards of 1,500 in attendance, has 36 teams competing and has a panel of 9 judges with professional experience in the food industry. The 2013 Cook-off is widely regarded as the most competitive to date.

All chili must be made from scratch at the site of the contest. Women are barred from entering the contest as chefs. In response to the second rule, another cookoff was established in Luckenbach, Texas named "Hell Hath No Fury Like A Woman Scorned," in which the winners similarly qualify for the world championship cookoff.
