The trust was established as the Royal Cornwall Hospitals and West Cornwall Hospital NHS Trust on 1 November 1991, and became operational on 1 April 1992. It changed its name to its current name soon after on 9 June 1992. [3] [4]

The hospital has its origins in the Penzance Dispensary established in 1809. [1] This became the West Cornwall Dispensary and Infirmary in 1873 and the West Cornwall Hospital in 1928. [1] It joined the National Health Service in 1948. [1] A new CT scanner and new X-ray equipment were installed at the hospital in spring 2018. [2]
In January 2018, the trust said it was owed £2.1m by Cornwall Council under the contract for adult community services which it took over in April 2016. [ 3 ] It set up a new unit, Cove Ward at Longreach in Redruth in March 2018 as a fast-track rehabilitation service, and to avoid patients being sent out of the area.
The Norfolk and Suffolk NHS foundation trust closed 35 beds, 8 permanently, in the months up to August 2018 due to staff shortages. [9] The Care Quality Commission has rated Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust inadequate four times up to April 2022. They noted patients self harmed or attempt suicide while waiting for care.
Community services were provided by Peninsula Community Health from 2011 but from April 2016 will be taken over by a consortium of Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust, Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust and Kernow Health CIC. [16] In May 2017 there was a backlog of 14,000 people unable to register with an NHS dentist in the county.

The hospital has its origins in the Redruth Mines Infirmary, which was largely financed by Lord Robartes and completed in 1863. [1] An accident ward was added in 1871. [2] The West Cornwall Women's Hospital was completed on an adjacent site in 1899, [3] and the two hospitals amalgamated in 1901.
