Music in Twelve Parts is a set of twelve pieces written between 1971 and 1974 by the composer Philip Glass. [ 1 ] This work cycle was originally scored for ten instruments, played by five musicians: three electric organs, two flutes, four saxophones (two soprano, one alto, one tenor) and one female voice.
The piece quickly became one of Glass's most popular works, [2] and appears on a number of recordings. Gidon Kremer , the first soloist to record the work, says the concerto "is a work typical of Glass, in which a certain enigmatic drive allows the performer to feel both bound to strict rhythm and free in his fantasy". [ 8 ]
Glass then inserts a characteristic series of chord progressions often present in his mature style. These rise in intensity, flying into a complex, ecstatic tutti . Playing throughout the majority of the movement, the timpani guide the orchestra into a quick descent, and, having quieted the ensemble, provide gentle pulse .

The symphony is in four movements.The first movement is elemental in nature, initially based on pulsing Cs but giving way before long to contrasting scales. It is soft and brief, evocative of the composer's earlier string quartets, and acts as a prelude to the faster and more lively second movement, which begins with running quavers that immediately signal a change in texture and harmonic breadth.
