Vu was born in Hanoi (Vietnam) in 1970. He went to special math classes for gifted children at Chu Van An and Hanoi-Amsterdam high schools. In 1987, he went to Hungary for his undergraduate studies, and in 1994, obtained his M.Sc in mathematics at the Faculty of Sciences of the Eötvös University, Budapest.
The Curta calculator used the method of complements for subtraction, and managed to hide this from the user. Numbers were entered using digit input slides along the side of the device. The number on each slide was added to a result counter by a gearing mechanism which engaged cams on a rotating "echelon drum" (a.k.a. "step drum").
The binary subtraction process is summarized below. As with an adder, in the general case of calculations on multi-bit numbers, three bits are involved in performing the subtraction for each bit of the difference : the minuend ( X i {\displaystyle X_{i}} ), subtrahend ( Y i {\displaystyle Y_{i}} ), and a borrow in from the previous (less ...
subtraction when D = 1. This works because when D = 1 the A input to the adder is really A and the carry in is 1. Adding B to A and 1 yields the desired subtraction of B − A. A way you can mark number A as positive or negative without using a multiplexer on each bit is to use an XOR gate to precede each bit instead.
In mathematics, the ± sign generally indicates a choice of exactly two possible values, one of which is obtained through addition and the other through subtraction. In statistics and experimental sciences , the ± sign commonly indicates the confidence interval or uncertainty bounding a range of possible errors in a measurement, often the ...
Both these methods break up the subtraction as a process of one digit subtractions by place value. Starting with a least significant digit, a subtraction of the subtrahend: s j s j−1... s 1. from the minuend m k m k−1... m 1, where each s i and m i is a digit, proceeds by writing down m 1 − s 1, m 2 − s 2, and so forth, as long as s i ...
In all single-bit shift operations, the bit shifted out of the operand appears on carry-out; the value of the bit shifted into the operand depends on the type of shift. Arithmetic shift : the operand is treated as a two's complement integer, meaning that the most significant bit is a "sign" bit and is preserved.
A three-digit, decimal numeral can represent only up to 999. But if the number-base is increased to 11, say, by adding the digit "A", then the same three positions, maximized to "AAA", can represent a number as great as 1330. We could increase the number base again and assign "B" to 11, and so on (but there is also a possible encryption between ...
